Same as every season, some exciting new makeup trends have emerged from the Fall/Winter 2016 runway. All fashion observers agree that dark lipstick will be the biggest makeup trend for the next winter. Out with the conventional colors! This winter, you should embrace dramatic, blackened shades, and experiment with two-toned ombre, wine-stained, or completely black lip. Dark lipsticks were everywhere on the runway during Fashion Week, but Dior’s take on bold lip captured our attention the most.
Dior’s Creative and Image Director, Peter Philips, designed a rich, creamy shade to make lips the focal point of the look. The new shade Philip designed for the Rouge Dior Lipstick line is called Poison, and it looks something like a deep purple turning to black.
As Philips explained in a recent interview for WWD, the lips were prepped and primed with Dior Addict Lip Glow, and then made up using Dior Contour Lip Liner and Rouge Dior in Poison to obtain an extreme shade of plum, which is almost black. The lips were then coated with Dior Addict Ultra Gloss in Bulle, a crystal-clear shade, for a captivating mirror effect. The real challenge was to keep lips from looking too Gothic. Instead, Philips wanted to create a nod to the Twenties or Thirties. This season, Dior woman is daring, dangerous, and poisonous… Kendall Jenner perfectly demonstrates the trend, as her dark glossy lips were offset by pale skin, spider lashes, and bold brows.
The Poison, which is named after Dior’s cult favorite fragrance, is said to be a universally flattering shade, but there are a couple of golden rules to follow while wearing such a dark lipstick. The new Rouge Dior shade, which will be out next season, can be made less Gothic by adding a high gloss so it becomes more glamorous. The rest of the makeup should be kept low-key. This means, gorgeous, radiant complexion, and only natural-looking neutrals for the lids. Instead lining and contouring, Peter Philips recommends extreme, spider lashes. You may use faux lashes, or rely on the transformative powers of Dior’s new Diorshow Maximizer 3D lash primer for a clumpy, controlled-chaos effect. As for the nails, match your lips and your tips, or opt for a barely-there pinky-beige polish.
To safely pull off the Dior Runway's black lips look, you may modify your lip shade and opt for something less bolder, such as deep burgundy or dark eggplant. To make it less Gothic, may also go for a dark lipstick with a berry undertone, instead of a black.
