Exclusive Preview of Spring/Summer 2012 Beauty Trends

On June 9th 2011, beautypress, an international PR network and Edelkoort Inc. joined forces for the fifth time to host an invitation-only beauty trend event at Edelkoort’s NYC headquarters, The Firehouse, to introduce the spring/summer beauty trends for the year 2012.

To start, the founder and CEO of beautypress, Gabriele Fuchs first introduced guests to the beautypress concept;an international PR network that increases visibility for beauty brands while serving as a resource for official PR material for beauty editors.

Then, the leading expert and executive director of Edelkoort Inc., Emmanuelle Linard gave an exclusive preview of beauty trends for Spring/Summer 2012 named EARTH MATTERS. In 2010 alone, a total of 407 natural disasters devastated the Earth, drawing urgent attention back to the importance, beauty and majestic qualities of nature and its raw materials. Emmanuelle covered nine categories of Earth materials to interpret beauty and well-being trends in colors, materials, textures, packaging for skin care, body care, fragrances, cosmetics and more:

Chalk: The serene, natural and porous texture of chalk will inspire soft fabrics in pale colors for beauty packaging. Textile packaging will make a comeback, as traditional fabric making (in the Italian textile mills) is becoming a lost art and will therefore inspire a need for its revival. Makeup looks will feature while powder on brows, eyes and lashes, and an overall pale complexion. Focus will be on cool colors, chalky powders and light, porous and irregular materials.

Sand: This trend direction is inspired by the relaxing, calming feeling of being on a beach. Colors will be inspired by different sand varieties, including white, warm beige, brown and black. Focus will be on scrubs with sandy textures to polish skin to a glow. Loose powders in makeup will be prevalent and this trend inspires a “safari queen” look for makeup, with a sandy stardust complexion and dark, dramatic lips.

Stones: Colors will be a palette of browns, beiges, and greys. Focus will be on mineral face masks. Marble patterns, rocky and irregular textures will be the trend for beauty packaging.

Earth: This trend draws focus on the use of mud and soil for treatments. Thick, muddy smears are also an influence, as are various mud textures to make the body look like a sculpture. Makeup and packaging colors will experiment with earthy colors and terra cotta tones.

Roots: This trend encompasses various vegetables (ginger, garlic, green onion) for skin treatments. Focus is also on the fibrous aspect of roots, which translates into messy, nesty hairstyles.

Water: The aspect of water as being an essential element for life is the inspiration for this trend. Focus will be on water treatments for skin and transparent and bubbly materials for packaging. Makeup colors will feature deep blue ocean hues and luminous mother of pearl shades. Attention will be on seaweed and sea mud ingredients in beauty products.

Crystals: Colors will feature pinkish hues and smoky tones, as well as deep amethyst and greens. Irregular, faceted qualities of crystals will be translated into unique packaging designs.

Gold: This trend draws inspiration from the precious, ornate and ancient qualities of gold. Cleopatra is the motif for makeup looks- shiny, coppery skin, metallic nails, gold eyeliner and pairing deep purple and gold shadows to emphasize the eyes. Ornate, decorative and baroque styles will be the trend for beauty packaging, especially for fragrances. Trends will also explore the healing, edible properties of gold.

Volcano: This trend explores very dark, black, grey ashy colors with fiery red accents. Beauty formulas will be enriched with volcanic materials, which are high in nutrients. Textures will be sleek and shiny. Makeup looks will incorporate smudged oil/tar looks and ashy eyes in dark, shiny colors.
