Interview with Genius Makeup Artist Katie Alves

The world of art is wonderful... surprising... breathtaking... challenging... and when it's combined with makeup then it's something really worth looking at. We invite you to meet Katie Alves, a young makeup artist who has changed the way we look at makeup.

Believe it or not, Katie Alves, 21-year old from Canada, used eyelids as canvas to paint scenes from her favourite Disney movies: Tangled, The Lion King, Aladdin, The Night Before Christmas, Alice in Wonderland and Snow White. Incredible as it sounds Katie used the standard makeup products we all have in our cosmetic pouches, all combined with lots and lots of patience.

Katie's artistic masterpieces intrigued me so much that I just had to get in touch with her and ask her a few questions about her amazing hobby.

Inezza: What inspired you to use eyelids as a canvas?

Katie: Well I first started out when I got a random idea to do a little design on my lips for halloween then it evolved into my eye make-up! I thought, well if I can do lips, why not eyes?

Inezza: Why did you choose images from Disney cartoons?

Katie: I don't just do Disney. I have a lot of non-Disney stuff. The first one I did was because of a follower of mine. They asked for something snow white and I did it. Next was after I had just seen the movie Tangled, I loved the movie so much that I had to do a scene! Then I just kept going!

Inezza: Which makeup products did you use to create the scenes?

Katie: Mainly Covergirl eyeshadow and Rimmel liquid eyeliner!

Inezza: How much time did it take to paint one eyelid?

Katie: It usually ranges from 1-2 hours.

Inezza: When did you realize you wanted to become a makeup artist? What or who inspired you?

Katie: Pretty much the exact same answer as number one. I haven't really become a make-up artist, I just do it for a hobby!

Inezza: Do you have a role-model among professional makeup artists?

Katie: Not really professional, but an artist on youtube got me really interested in make-up:

Inezza: What advice would you give to young girls that are just starting to discover the world of makeup?

Katie: Seriously, have fun with it! Just keep pushing yourself. If you can't get that perfect line, keep trying. Or move onto something like the perfect blending technique. It may be surprising, but I seriously fail at doing a perfect line, it's always shaky. You never know what you can actually do before you try it!

As you can see, Katie is much more than an ordinary makeup artist, she teaches us the importance of expressing ourselves and how the world of makeup really has no limits. Check out Katie's page on DeviantArt to browse through her other makeup creations!
