SUMMARY: Avène Trixéra Sélectiose Emollient Cream is a non-prescription, rich moisturizer suitable for dry, sensitive skin (face and body). Approved by the National Eczema Foundation, it is even suitable for children and infants. Enriched with ceramides and essential fatty acids to smooth and soften the skin, unscented Avène Trixéra Sélectiose Emollient Cream also doubles as an effective aftershave moisturizer and was recommended by my dermatologist to help me survive a recent bout of dermatitis.

ABOUT THE BRAND: Avène has over 270 years of expertise in caring for sensitive skin and is trusted by millions worldwide. At the heart of the brand is Avène Thermal Spring Water, a natural soothing source clinically shown by over 150 studies to soothe, soften and calm the skin. Avène is widely recognized as #1 in French pharmacies among dermo-cosmetic skincare brands and also the most recommended by European dermatologists.

USE: I recently experienced a bout of minor dermatitis smack dab in the middle of my forehead. I visited a dermatologist who prescribed two topical ointments (one a steroid) to treat the light flaking and redness. The prescription ointments were fantastic...at first. Upon discontinuing use when the dermatitis disappeared, my skin immediately broke out into what appeared to be adult acne. I went back to the prescription ointments and the acne immediately disappeared. But as soon as I stopped using them, the acne re-appeared with a vengeance. Such has been my life for the past 5 months.

Out of frustration I visited a different dermatologist, my forehead and scalp completely covered in embarrassing acne, who told me that the first physician's ointments were definitely not suitable for the sensitive skin of face and forehead and never should have been prescribed; I was having an allergic reaction to the them. I was feeling really frustrated that I had been dealing with this issue for so long and disappointed that I hadn't sought a second opinion sooner.

To combat the current vicious cycle of ointment and acne, my dermatologist directed me to use a 5% Benzoyl Peroxide wash, prescribed a much gentler steroid (Clindamycin Phosphate 1%), and encouraged to complete the process with Avène Trixéra Sélectiose Emollient Cream to help restore my skin's moisture.

Man applying moisturizer

I've used Benzoyl Peroxide washes in the past and appreciate how they deeply cleanse the skin and reduce acne, but they can be drying. I had never used the Clindmaycin before so was unsure what to expect. As a beauty blogger, I've tried A LOT of moisturizers and am rarely excited by any of them so I was dubious about the $29 USD Trixéra.

A week after I began this second routine, the acne completely disappeared. Two weeks later and I discontinued use of the wash and steroid. Three weeks later and I'm still using the Trixéra Sélectiose Cream, not just on my forehead, but as an aftershave and body moisturizer as well. It is THAT good. My skin looks great, feels soft and smooth, and I'm now curious about other Avène products.

TEXTURE & AROMA: Trixéra Sélectiose Cream is completely unscented. The texture is a thick cream that absorbs quickly into skin without leaving an oily residue. My skin both looks and feels great and I never feel like I've just used a moisturizer. A little bit of cream goes a long way!

Marlen's tip: Use immediately after washing skin while it is still moist to aid even distribution of the cream.

INGREDIENTS: Water, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Mineral Oil, Glycerin, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Polysorbate 60, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil, Sorbitan Stearate, Cetyl Esters, Dimethicone, Benzoic Acid, BHT, Carbomer, Chlorphenesin, Disodium EDTA, Glycine, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Seed Extract, Pentylrhamnosides, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Hydroxide.

PROS & CONS: Though more expensive than typical drugstore products, Avène's products are priced similarly to upscale department store and boutique brands. And as far as Trixéra is concerned, a little goes a long way. The lack of fragrance, parabens and preservatives are also a big plus.

Reviews are very positive around the web with one individual writing:

"My new dermatologist recently sold me this cream. I have severe eczema and this has stopped the itching that comes along with it. This has truly saved my life and this is definitely a must have for anyone going through what I've been through with eczema." AveneUSA.com

Another reviewer noted that the cream does tend to leave a bit of a shine on skin:

"If you're looking for a cream that moisturizes and dried relatively quickly this is it. It lasts THE ENTIRE DAY and leaves your skin super soft. I would give it a 5 but I use it on my body and face and doesn't dry matte on my face. It's perfect for body though." AveneUSA.com

And yet another reviewer explained:

"The Avene Trixera cream was recommended to me as a "boost" to my regular facial moisturizer. I live in Colorado where dry skin is a constant challenge, especially during the winter months. Avene Trixera has been the most effective cream I have ever used to eliminate dryness, leaving my facial skin incredibly soft, moist and beautifully smooth, without feeling too greasy. It is non-irritating, does not clog pores, and a very little bit goes a long way. It is a fabulous body lotion, too - perfect to bring needed moisture and youthfulness back to skin on shins, knees, elbows, arms and hands! LOVE IT!" LovelySkin.com

WHERE CAN I BUY IT? $29 USD for a 200ml tube at Aveneusa.com
