Barbara Rattigan, Founder of Shavasana Eyelash Extensions Offers Tips For Creating Fashion Week's Bold Eye Looks

With the end of Mercedes-Benz Fall 2011 Fashion Weekupcoming beauty trends are top of mind – and the impact of a dramatic gaze hasn’t gone unnoticed. From the Marilyn Monroe long, heavy lash, to 80s glam rock Cyndi Lauper’s eyelash accents and the retro styles of the Mad Men women, the bold lash look will be all the rage this Spring.

Barbara Rattigan, Founder of Shavasana Eyelash Extensions, offers Beauty Almanac readers tips to make next season’s thick, bold lash trend work for them now. These looks can be achieved either by a salon beauty professional or at home.

Think Twiggy Late 60’s:

Runway models of Fashion Week 2011 have inspired the spider lash trend. Three ways to achieve this chunky lash look:

  • Lash Extensions – Ask your lash extension technician to use both a long and short thick lash across the lash line to subtly create the appearance of gaps between the lashes. Thin lash extensions can also be applied to bottom lashes.
  • Permanent Mascara – Lash Dip or Cry Baby are the top permanent mascara lashes that can be applied in a salon or spa and the mascara application will last about a month. For a chunky look, ask for multiple coats from your beauty professional. The lashes should also be separated to give some definition. The permanent mascara can be applied to the bottom lashes as well.  Fabulous fat lashes for a month!
  • Mascara and a safety pin – Apply your mascara on thick - coat after coat, after coat. Coat the bottoms too, and make it chunky. Then, carefully use a safety pin to separate the lashes. You’ve got the look, economically and no commitment to the trend.

Mad Men Sexy Sixties:

  • Silk or Mink Lash Extensions - A silk or mink lash is a necessity to truly create the opulence of this look. Turn to your lash extension professional to get this sexy siren style. The extensions should be thinner and shorter in the inner corner of the eyes, thickening and lengthening as they move out. Top off this look with a black winged liner and red lipstick.
  • False Lashes + Mascara – Cut the strip lashes into smaller pieces (strip lashes will be used to build volume on the outer corners of the eye). Apply mascara to lashes. Next, apply the cut strip lash from the middle of the lash line to the outer corners. Use black liner and re-apply mascara to all of the lashes. Be sure to blend the liner into the lash line. Pair the look with a bold red lip.

Soft Side of the Seventies:

  • Brown Lash Extensions – For a look that is very fresh, young and new, ask your salon professional for brown lash extensions. Brown lash extensions lend to a sultry and sexy look when paired with a metallic shadow like copper, gold, and silvers.
  • Mascara – Apply just one coat of mascara to the tips of lashes. The mascara can be brown or black, but keep it light. Finally, conquer the look with metallic shadow and a glossy lip.
