If you are interested in the origin of their unusual name: kabuki is classical Japanese dance-drama distinguished by mask-like make up. The makeup is used to exaggerate facial lines and produce theatrical, animalistic, or even supernatural appearance. Keshō, kabuki makeup, actually uses a rice powder as a base and applies kumadori makeup of different colors to symbolize the aspects of the actor’s character. For example, villains and negative traits are depicted with black and dark blue shades (beard, veins, eyebrows…) while red stripes usually indicate virtue and power, and they are used to depict heroes in a drama.
