As we announced a couple of weeks ago, a famous Nepalese American fashion designer Prabal Gurung is collaborating with MAC Cosmetics on his first color cosmetics line.
The popular beauty brand and Prabal Gurung have already collaborated on the make-up for his ready-to-wear shows. The successful partnership has lasted for several seasons, but this is the first time that Gurung creates his own makeup. The collection was announced earlier this year, when MAC described it as an ultimately luxurious, deco-themed holiday range. As you can see, the packaging is truly gorgeous, gold-colored and inspired by the jeweled minaudières of the 1920’s. If you’re not familiar with this term, a minaudière is a lavishly decorated case, a fashion accessory, which allows storage for a couple of lady’s necessities – typically makeup and jewelry. It serves as a substitute for an evening bag, and is generally considered a jewelry piece.
In an interview for WWD, Gurung explains: “My love of fashion and beauty began when I was a kid. It was my comfort, my escape. I didn’t know the beauty brands or the big designers when I was really young, but I was fascinated by the packaging and the beautiful boxes. It was almost magical. I’d see my mom come home from work and put on all this makeup and it would be a total transformation happening, and [I saw] the confidence that came with that.”
Gurung’s intention was to create a packaging that is going to make a woman feel beautiful even before she puts the makeup on. Same as his haute couture collections, Gurung’s makeup line is intended to represent what the person wearing it stands for. Accordingly, the products themselves are offered in an array of sheer, natural colors, as they are meant to highlight and enhance the natural beauty of the lady that wears them. Prabal Gurung for MAC Holiday Collection is, therefore, perfect for intelligent and beautiful women who are aware of the space they occupy. It includes 14-stockkeeping-units including bronzing powder, a cream color base and a square-handled buffer brush (each for $70), three eye-shadow duos ($40 apiece,) three lipsticks and three Lipglasses (each for $30), a black eye pencil (for $20) and a Chromagraphic pencil (also $20.)
Prabal Gurung for MAC Holiday Collection is scheduled to launch on November 26th, in MAC stores across North America and in December in all of the brand’s international stores except China. Visitors of Gurung’s show on September 6th will get a preview of the makeup range.
